How it works
The Homecoming Committee was created in 2010 to oversee all university Homecoming events. This committee was formed because as Homecoming and the football tradition continue to grow at Duke, we need a group, made up of a variety of university partners, to manage and oversee all Homecoming activities. The Homecoming Committee (HC) has three main goals:
1. Approve all official University Homecoming events.
By creating a pathway and approval process to host an official Homecoming event, we hope that more groups, organizations, and departments will participate as official partners of Homecoming. Ideally, this will also lead to less duplication of events and more streamline marketing of all Homecoming activities. (Although all groups are encouraged to submit their event to be an “official” Homecoming event, if a group does not need space or wish to have their event advertised with the Homecoming schedule, they do not need to submit an application. The process is designed to encourage more groups to get involved with Homecoming, not to create a barrier to involvement.)
2. Release space for approved events.
The HC will be the one body that can approve use of campus space on Homecoming Weekend, and where appropriate, throughout the week before.
3. Manage the Homecoming brand.
Working with DIDA and the DAA Marketing staff – the HC will work with all groups hosting events to incorporate the Homecoming brand into their events and marketing materials.
How will the new structure work?
The HC will be responsible for approving all Homecoming events and setting the official Homecoming schedule. The HC will not be responsible for the planning of these events, but will work with all parties who are interested in planning a Homecoming event. The HC will be encouraged to evaluated the success of events and consider how we can work with those organizing the events to improve the events. The goal of the committee is not to make any significant changes to events, but rather to reduce confusion and overlap amongst Homecoming events and coordinate marketing efforts.
When will the new structure be evaluated?
After Homecoming 2011 we will work will all constituents involved in Homecoming 2010 to review the process, structure, and changes that need to be made.
Who will serve on the committee?
This committee is intended to be a steering committee and not a programming body. With this in mind, it is not the intention of the Homecoming Committee to have every group represented. The HC will be made up of students, staff, and local alumni who can best represent the current student body and their desires on Homecoming. (Ideally students would serve for 2 years.)
Become an "Official Event"
Any student group, department, or affinity group is encouraged to submit an application to have your event added to the Homecoming event calendar.
The first deadline for applications was June 1. The second deadline for applications is July 15. The final deadline is September 1.
Please note that any events submitted after July 15 will not be included in the marketing materials sent to alumni. Additionally, the earlier you apply, the better chance you will have to secure a space on campus.)
