In his baccalaureate address, President Richard H. Brodhead encouraged new graduates to make a difference. One example was successful community project run by alumni in the Duke Club of Washington. "In short, this was a miscellaneous group doing all the different things people do in the world who came together as a self-motivated, self-mobilized team, for the good they could accomplish together." Day of Remembrance

A service on September 11, 2006, honored the six Duke alumni who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The ceremony was held in the Keohane Quad Memorial Grove at 10:40 a.m. at the plaque that rests between the six trees planted in 2002 as a memorial to our lost alumni.
