The Duke Alumni Association is very happy to offer another opportunity to travel to Haiti. Through our ongoing relationship with Durham-based Family Health Ministries, a nonprofit dedicated to improving health in Haiti, the DAA will send a second group to Haiti in May 2012. Our group will help provide medical care at FHM’s clinic, located in the Blanchard community of Port au Prince. Building on our successful efforts last year, DAA invites Duke alumni and friends, with medical or nonmedical backgrounds, to participate. The Blanchard clinic, located close to Cite Soleil, provides care to around 350 patients per month. These services are augmented by short-term trips from visiting healthcare teams, such as our Duke group. FHM’s Blanchard clinic is staffed full-time by Haitian health care professionals, who offer primary care services to the community. Visiting providers supplement their ongoing work by assisting with the overwhelming demand for acute care in pediatrics, internal medicine and OB/GYN. To run the clinic, our group needs five health care professionals (physicians, physician’s assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, etc.) and eight additional alumni to support the clinical team by assisting with intake, taking vital signs, managing the pharmacy, and performing simple lab tests. Our team will work with local interpreters, hired by FHM, to communicate with patients. Kathy Walmer, Family Health Ministries’ Executive Director and adjunct faculty member at Duke’s Global Health Institute, will lead the program.
