Frequently Asked Questions

How can the Fannie Mitchell Exchange help my career?

The Fannie Mitchell Exchange is an informational, exploratory event that helps students at all stages of their career development learn about different career options. Students may sign up for two different discussion sessions, where they get to ask questions and listen to alums talk about their professional experiences. Students will learn different paths they can take to find careers that are well-suited to their knowledge and interests, as well as hear honest advice from alumni about being in the work force.

How is the FMX personalized for me?

The Exchange allows students many opportunities to ask questions they have about what to do after college. The event begins with a breakfast with over fifty alumni, where students have a chance to talk one on one with many alums working in career fields they may be interested in. They will get a chance to speak to alumni that they may not see in their small group discussion sessions. During the discussion sessions, students will have a chance to learn from the experience, expertise, insight and advice of the presenting alumnus/a, as well as ask questions.

How is the FMX a unique event at Duke?

The Exchange provides a great casual networking opportunity with alumni while helping students gain valuable information about careers they may be interested in. Students will receive honest advice from alumni, and hear what they think of their experience with their career field.

How will the FMX provide networking opportunities?

Students participating in the FMX will have many opportunities to interact directly with alumni. They will have a chance during the opening breakfast to speak one on one with alumni, and they will be able to be involved with a small group discussion with the alumni. Through these two aspects of the Exchange, students will end up speaking to multiple alums. At the closing reception, students will have yet another chance for one-on-one time with alumni, and they will be able to find new people they did not get to speak with, or want to hear more from.

Should I bring a resume?

No. The Fannie Mitchell Exchange is an informational and networking event, not a job interview. Alumni will expect students to have questions, and students will have a chance to learn valuable knowledge from the alums and their experiences.

What should I wear?

This is a casual event, but you will be interacting with professionals. Students should dress cleanly and neatly, but not in business attire. Remember, this is not a job interview.

I am considering signing up to be a student liaison, in order to have extra time to network with a particular alumnus/a. What are the responsibilities of a student liaison?

Student liaisons will work closely with alumni in order to make sure the event runs smoothly. On Friday evening, liaisons will attend a dessert reception to meet the alumni they will be paired with for the event. On Saturday, student liaisons will be in charge of room set-up, and they will escort their alum to the discussion session, and introduce them to the session participants. They will also take attendance and help the alumni feel comfortable. Liaisons are required to attend a mandatory training session prior to event. Student liaisons will also receive complimentary Fannie Mitchell Exchange t-shirts!

How do I sign up to be a liaison?

All liaisons will be required to attend a training session, either on Tuesday, January 31st or Wednesday, February 1st. Detailed information will be sent to confirmed liaisons prior to the trainings.
