What happened in 2010?
- A number of Duke Club of Germany members have engaged as alumni interviewers with the Duke Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee (AAAC) throughout Germany during the winter interviewing German students applying at Duke University. The AAAC in Germany is headed and coordinated by its chairperson, Duke Club of Germany co-founding member and member of the Club’s Delegates’ Assembly Gisela Rose-Shortridge. According to Gisela, the current 2010/2011 season looks again very promising as the AAAC has already registered more German applications prior to the year’s end than we had in the entire season of 2009/2010. We also count on you all to share your positive Duke experience with your friends and colleagues and make Duke even more popular among young and talented German students!
- On April 16, Prof. Ralph L. Keeney of the Duke University Fuqua School of Business gave a presentation on “Insights from Decision Science to Help Make Better Decisions” in Munich. The event was well received and drew a fairly large crowd of Duke alumni and representatives of the local business community.
- In spring 2010, the Duke Club of Germany was approached by the prestigious Bavarian American Academy (“BAA”) to cooperate in its 2011 Fellowship Program. The Club decided to sponsor EUR 2,000 and together with the BAA award the Duke University Post-Graduate Research Fellowship for the 2011 summer/fall semester. This fellowship is one of four very exclusive fellowships initiated by the BAA, the other three being the John W. Kluge Center Fellowship (U.S. Library of Congress), the Harvard University Post-Graduate Research Fellowship and the Yale University Post-Graduate Research Fellowship.
- On September 17, we had our Annual Duke Oktoberfest Reception in Munich, followed by the traditional visit of the Oktoberfest at the Armbrustschützenzelt on September 18. We had about 50 Duke alumni and friends of Duke from all over Germany, Europe and the U.S. join us for this great event.
- Before visiting the Oktoberfest on September 18, the Club’s Delegates’ Assembly met in Munich and (re-)elected the Club’s board as follows:
- Sabine Schmidt-Pischner, Düsseldorf, was confirmed as Treasurer of the Club;
- Jens-Thorsten Rauer, Munich, was elected as a new member of the board, thereby replacing Hilka Schmitz, London (formerly Frankfurt);
- Dr. Sibylle Gierschmann, Munich (former President), was elected as the new Vice President; and
- Dr. Markus Nauheim, Munich (former Vice President), was elected as the new President.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sibylle for all the hard work and great leadership she provided to the Club over the past years and also thank Hilka for her great effort and the countless hours she spent for the Club. Thank you both very much!

On October 25, we were able to present another highlight in Germany with the concert of the world renowned Ciompi Quartet in Munich. All members of the Ciompi Quartet are professors at Duke University and play a leading role in its cultural life, in addition to traveling widely throughout the year for performances. The Quartet has been playing together for over 15 years and its members practice together each morning for about 2.5 hours. Such outstanding dedication showed in the Quartet’s excellent performance that evening. On a special note, . Assistant Vice President Alumni Affairs of Duke University, George Dorfman, MA ’01, BA ’85, came all the way from Durham to welcome the audience, introduce the Quartet and share the newest developments on and off campus of Duke University.
- On December 3, we hosted the Annual Duke Club of Germany Holiday Dinner at the Villa Leonhardi in Frankfurt. This event which was joined by more than 30 Duke alumni this year is developing into a beautiful and well received tradition of the Club.
