Sterly Wilder '83, of Durham, N.C., serves as secretary-treasurer of the DAA Board and is the associate vice president, Alumni Affairs, for Duke.

After graduating, Sterly went to work at Duke in Alumni and Development Records, researching lost alumni. In 1985, she began working with the Duke Annual Fund, where she ran the phonathon program, the young-alumni program, the 55th reunion gift drive, and the Parents' Fund (but not all at once!). She was promoted to director of the Annual Fund in 1991. In August of 2004, Sterly became executive director of Alumni Affairs, and in 2009, was promoted to Associate Vice President.

Duke is integral to Sterly's life, and she views her work as a way to give back to an institution that has done so much for her and her family. Her father, Pelham Wilder, retired in 2000 as a professor of chemistry and pharmacology after more than 50 years on the faculty. He also served more than 20 years as university marshal. Now Sterly is assistant university marshal.

She is also an academic advisor for first-year and sophomore students, has served on the Duke Club of the Triangle board, and volunteered for her fifth, 10th, 15th, 20th, and 25th reunions and as an Alumni Admissions interviewer. She also volunteers with Durham's Ronald McDonald House, Durham Academy's Alumni Board, and the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties.

George J. Dorfman ’85, AM’01, of Durham, N.C., serves as assistant vice president of Alumni Affairs for Duke.

As a Duke undergraduate, George served as a student manager for the men’s basketball team during the early years of Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s tenure. As a senior George was chosen as head manager, working more closely with the coaching staff. After graduation, Newberry College hired him as an assistant men’s basketball coach, and after one season, he went on to become an assistant coach at Cornell University for eight years.

When his family had the opportunity to relocate to the Research Triangle of North Carolina, George saw a chance to return to Duke. He retired from coaching and accepted a position as coordinator the Duke Clubs program at Duke Alumni Association in 1995. He soon became the assistant director for clubs, and in 2005, associate director of Alumni Affairs and director of regional programs. He advanced to vice president in 2009.

George says he loves working to help Duke serve its alumni and to keep alumni close to Duke. He says he is continually inspired by how alumni are willing to give back to Duke. He and his wife, Tammy, have two teenage children, Garrett and Holly.
