AFFINITY GROUP GATHERING AREAS
Affinty groups (groups of alumni with shared interests and backgrounds, such as fraternities, sororities, dorms, clubs, athletic teams, and other student groups) are encouraged to plan small group reunions over Homecoming Weekend 2007.
Gathering space on McClendon Plaza (old Bryan Center walkway) will be provided to groups that wish to gather during Homecoming. If you wish to reserve a space, please contact Mitch Yelverton at

Join author Osha Gray Davidson for a discussion about The Best of Enemies , the Class of 2011 summer reading and the first book in the DukeReads 2007 lineup.
7:00 – 9:30 p.m. Best Fest Perkins Library, West Campus
Come to the Biddle Rare Book Room for refreshments, student projects, and a display of materials from Duke's special collections relating to the civil rights era in Durham . The display will also be open to visitors on Friday from 1-5pm. Staff will be available on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. to discuss or interpret the materials on display and to answer questions.

“Out of the Blue” 25th Reunion
Join alumnae of Out of the Blue, Duke's first female a cappella group, as they celebrate more than 25 years of performing everywhere from Duke to Club Med to Carnegie Hall. Weekend events for OOTBA, family, and friends will include a Friday night party (location TBD), a Saturday-evening concert (followed by the Presidents' Dance), a Sunday morning brunch in the Duke Gardens , and much more. 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Care at Life's End: Great Beginnings Richard Payne, director of the Care at the End of Life program, Duke Divinity School Sanford Institute, Room 04
End-of-life care is more than palliative care. It includes instructing medical students, developing just and ethical health and public policy, and providing divinity school courses that address the theology of death and dying. Payne, a physician, will discuss how the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life goes about its mission to seek knowledge and rediscover wisdoms about the needs of seriously ill and dying people and their families.

There's a growing consensus that all people have a basic human right of access to essential medications and vaccines. Recognizing that a healthy population is essential for economic and social development has led to increased support for global health research and programs by governments and organizations to improve the health of populations the world over. Merson will discuss the global health concept and how Duke's institute supports and draws from the faculty, students, and schools from across campus, including business, divinity, engineering, environment, graduate, law, medicine, nursing—and undergraduates.

Join the author and one his main characters in discussing his nonfiction book about race and redemption in the New South. It's not only t he story of the friendship between black activist Ann Atwater and ex-Klansman C.P. Ellis but also a portrait of the evolution of race relations in Durham . The summer reading selection for f irst-year students, this book is the first of seven books chosen for DukeReads, www.dukereads.com, the Duke Alumni Association's online alumni book club. Benjamin Reese, vice president for institutional equity at Duke, will moderate.

Admission officers will offer an insider's view of Duke and the undergraduate experience and explain the admissions process and how to finance a Duke education, as well as the nature of academic life.

Now more than ever, individuals' privacy is threatened by hackers and identity thieves, commercial organizations in the private sector, and even government agencies. Panelists--experts in computer security, federal agency data collection, and privacy law and ethics—will discuss legal, technical, and moral issues of confidentiality in our “wired” society. Reiter is recipient of the 2007 Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Completed in 2005, the Divinity School 's new 53,000-square-foot addition represents a $22-million investment in the school's future and in the formation of church leadership.
4:15 – 4:45 p.m. Bostock Library and von der Heyden Pavilion Tour 1 Tour meets in the first floor lobby of the Bostock Library (new building next to Perkins Library)
Completed in October 2005, the Bostock Library comprises five floors of services and collections configured to create an environment conducive to study, learning, and research.

The DAA celebrates alumni who have been invited to participate in the Volunteer Leadership sessions during Homecoming Weekend and alumni who are employees of Duke.

This gala celebration begins with at a cocktail reception from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (cash full bar and light hors d'ouevres). Continue the reunion revelry at an elegant served dinner from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m., and then mix, mingle, and dance the night away as a pianist plays favorite songs from your Duke days. Wine will be served with dinner, and a full cash bar will be open throughout the evening. Cocktail attire.

7:00 p.m. Stanley Crouch Monk at Town Hall, 1959: A Talk Nasher Museum of Art Auditorium
Controversial, confrontational, and fiercely learned about jazz, Crouch bowls into Durham ready to break down Monk's legendary 1959 concert at New York's Town Hall, where Monk scored his music for tentet with Hall Overton. Tracing the comeback show of a blackballed genius, Crouch's riff on this monumental collaboration draws on insights from his new book on jazz history.

An annual event put on by Duke's National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the show is not only a celebration of the proud history of each organization, but also a fund-raiser that will allow the Duke NPHC to form and sustain community-outreach programs.

Alumni volunteer leaders are invited for a continental breakfast and a Volunteer Leadership plenary session, followed by small-group break-out sessions (alumni volunteers will separate into groups based on committee/program affiliation: Annual Fund Reunion Giving Committee, Alumni Admissions Advisory Council, Duke Clubs, or Reunion Attendance and Activities Committee.)

9:00 a.m. Duke Club Baseball Golf Tournament
Join the Club Baseball team for a golf tournament to be held at Hillandale Golf Course. Proceeds will provide umpires, field rental fees, and equipment for the club baseball program. 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Love on the Quad: Romantic Relationships Suzanne Shanahan, director of undergraduate studies and assistant professor of sociology Von Canon Hall, Bryan Student Center , lower level
What are today's college men and women doing, thinking, and feeling about sex, dating, courtship, marriage, and family? What is “appropriate” in their minds – for themselves and for their partners? How do men and women think differently about these norms and values? Shanahan will talk about the Provosts Common Fund Project that examines the changing relationships among adolescents on Duke's and other college campuses, and about the cultural logic of romantic relationships.
9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Lemur Center Tour
What little the world knows about lemurs comes almost exclusively from the internationally known research facility, the Duke Lemur Center . What is a lemur? Find out in an exclusive tour, and see the world's largest collection of lemurs and other endangered primates in an enclosed woodland habitat. Due to gravel paths, walking shoes are necessary. Buses depart from Science Drive entrance to Bryan Center parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

Join your fellow alumni and President Brodhead for lunch in the IM Building before the game. The combined efforts of the offices of the president, Duke Alumni Association, Half Century Club, and Duke Medical Alumni Reunions assure a festive university event.

Barack Obama may be different from past African-American presidential candidates, but are most Americans ready to elect a black president? In his meteoric rise to prominence, Ob ama has had many things working in his favor, but he also faces great obstacles. His strengths are his charisma, his innocence, and an apparent ability to bridge racial and partisan divides. But can he overcome the perception that he lacks national and international political experience?

President Brodhead began a tradition during Inauguration Weekend in 2004: a community-wide dance. Last year's dance was a huge success, with more than 2,500 guests. The evening will include performances by various Blue Devil dance and a capella groups. The featured band, Right On, will be playing classic songs from all generations! Spectacular music, food, lighting, and guests will transform Wilson Gym into the best dance and dinner club in the East. SPECIFICS: Wine/beer bar, nonalcoholic beverages, light hors d'oeuvres, and dessert will be available throughout the evening. Attire: festive, from business casual to cocktail.
