YOUNG ALUMNI

If you've graduated from Duke in the last decade, then you're what we classify as "young alumni." We have designed programs especially for you, whether you're entering the work force or settling into your first home with your new family.

What can the Duke Alumni Association do for you?

Remember to keep Duke in the loop! Did you recently finish a degree, finish a house, marry, move, make partner, make babies? If so, let us know. Go to the online Duke Alumni Directory to send us a class note, update your address or job info, and to share your good news with friends and classmates. You can also learn their news, and it's a great place to post photos.

Promote career and personal development through our emerging partnership with the Career Center and through enriching educational opportunities on campus and abroad.

Keep you informed about Duke news and events through the award-winning Duke Magazine and the bimonthly e-newsletter Duke Blue Connections.

Connecting you to the Duke Community through . . .
  • Welcome Parties. In 2007, the DAA launched our Forever Duke Welcome Party effort. We asked each city to host a party during a single week to welcome all new graduates and new alumni to their city. For 2008, the week of welcomes will be September 19-28. Many of you worked with us last September to execute Welcome Parties, which were a huge success. We have analyzed data collected and found the following:
    • More than 200 individuals had updated their addresses in the 2007 calendar, and 100 more since 2005. This means that more than 60% of attendees had moved to their respective cities in the 10 months preceding the parties, and 90% of the attendees had moved to their respective cities within the last 3 years.
    • Almost 70% of the attendees were graduates of the last 3 classes, and 80% overall were young alumni (graduated within the last 10 years).
    • 85% of the attendees hold undergraduate degrees from Duke. Of those from graduate and professional schools, Fuqua led the way with 7%, followed by the Graduate School with 3%, and Law with 2%.
    • 15% updated their addressess between October 1 and December 31, 2007.

  • Volunteer Opportunities. As young alumni, you have a number of unique opportunities available to give back to the university:
    • Young Alumni Admissions Link (YAAL) - YAALink is a partnership between the admissions office and alumni affairs that draws on young alumni to help recruit newly accepted students to attend Duke.
    • DukeConnect - This is a database of alumni who are looking to connect with students and advise them on careers, city advice, selecting their majors, and just life in general. (DukeConnect is currently being revamped, and will be re-launched in August; all volunteers will be transferred to the new system.)
    • Duke Clubs - Many Duke clubs around the world are looking for young alumni to volunteer. Please get in touch with your local club contact or the Duke staff member responsible for your region.
    • Volunteer Portal - The DAA has built a tool to help you sort through the many volunteer opportunities, both on and off campus. Please click on the link above and search the different ways you can get involved.

  • Local Clubs. With more than 100 Duke clubs across the nation and abroad, it's likely there's one near you. Clubs offer a variety of social, educational, community-service, and networking opportunities. For club contacts and websites, go to www.dukealumni.com/clubs.

  • Online class notes. Keep track of what your classmates are doing. Post your latest news -- and photos -- at www.dukealumni.com/classnotes.

  • Homecoming. Come back to campus for fall football, the Step Show, the President's Homecoming Dance, Young Alumni and Senior Class Party, and lots more. Homecoming 2008 is October 17-19, and registration will be available in August for more information, go to www.dukealumni.com/homecoming.

  • Reunions. Come back to campus for your reunion weekend, a university-wide event, a three-day celebration that takes center stage on campus in the spring. Your upcoming reunion dates are:
      Classes of 1999 and 2004 -- April 17-19, 2009
      Classes of 2000 and 2005 -- April 16-19, 2010

  • DAA online directory. Easily locate lost friends, search your city for other Duke alumni, or update your own information. Registration is fast and simple. Keep us notified of your latest address so we can keep you notified of the latest Duke events in your area. Get connected: www.dukedirectory.com.

Promoting career and personal development through . . .

  • Personal Development Workshops. As we continue to listen to and learn about what recent graduates want, we're exploring workshops around the country to help you with buying a home, considering graduate-school career options, and even planning for retirement (it's never too early). In Spring 2007, we offered two programs we called MBA 101 (in NYC) and Law 101 (in DC). The DAA collaborated with our on-campus partners to create programs for young alumni to get an insider's perspective to applying to business or law schools. For Spring 2008, we expanded our MBA 101 program, a partnership with the Fuqua School , to bring the workshop to four new cities, and more than 100 young alumni attended the events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. A podcast of the D.C. session will be available online in early July.
  • DukeConnect. The DAA and the Career Center have created on online tool designed for networking, job searches, and advising undergraduates. It's important to register and put yourself on the list since many students have questions about internships, housing, and other areas. You, as a young alumnus/na, are the perfect source -- and resource. dukeconnect

  • Career Services. The DAA is currently undergoing an extensive evaluation of all alumni career services. An essential component of our strategic plan is our commitment to providing appropriate, valuable services to our alumni body. We anticipate that this new, improved benefit will be in place by Summer 2008, and it will include online and in-person networking, advising, and job listings. Thank you for your patience as we develop these services more fully. If you have feedback, please email alumnicareer@daa.duke.edu.
